As a company founder, it’s natural to hesitate before trusting others to manage key areas of your business. However, trust is essential for a business to scale.
The complexities involved in scaling a business demand diverse expertise and success in empowering others.
Trust: Empowering Others Without Undermining Them
Trust isn’t just a vague concept in the context of building your company. It’s a strategic tool that requires empowering others to take control and responsibility of specific business areas. However, we’re not talking about BLIND trust. It’s an exercise in building mutual respect and confidence while holding colleagues accountable for results.
The alternative—clinging to every decision—is unsustainable.
Here are six areas I would recommend you focus on to build this trust, allow your leaders to fully contribute to greater success, and hold them accountable for results.
- Have a Clear Organizational Vision and Strategy. Define your company’s long-term goals and create a strategic roadmap to achieve them. Clearly communicate this vision to align your team and foster a shared sense of purpose.
- Be Adaptable and Flexible. As your business evolves, adapt your leadership style to be team-oriented and embrace change when needed. Recognize constant change in the business world and include your leadership team in routine discussions about adapting your approach as needed. Think technology, market shifts, and organizational structures, just to name a few.
- Delegate and Trust Your Team. Assign areas of responsibility to capable leaders and empower them to make decisions. Make clear the importance of their responsibilities within the Organizational Vision and define success with SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) Then, establish a one-on-one meeting routine to learn about progress and/or be a resource to help when needed.
- Build a Strong Team. Invest in hiring individuals who bring complementary skills and share your values. Through your example, foster a positive work culture that encourages creativity, accountability, and collaboration.
- Communicate Clearly. Articulate the “why” behind changes and address concerns effectively. Listen actively to feedback from employees, customers, and partners to foster transparency and build trust.
- Be Resilient and Persevere. Manage setbacks and obstacles on the path to growth. Understand the value of failing fast if something doesn’t work and then course correct.. Stay focused on your long-term goals with resilience and perseverance.
The Insecurity Trap
Insecurity can sneak up on anyone. It shows itself when we undermine those we empower, we lack transparency, and we’re a poor listener. The consequences are detrimental: You’ll find yourself limited by constrained growth, the inability to retain top talent, and the loss of expertise recruited into the company.
Trust to Grow
Trust must be embedded in your company’s culture for it to thrive. Empowering others might seem risky, but it’s a calculated investment in your company’s future. Overcome the instinct to hold on too tightly and watch as your team rises to the challenge.
